Mac screen recording audio to MP3
macOS screen recordings are QuickTime MOV files. If the narration is missing, the microphone was off. Here is how to check, extract the track and convert it to MP3.
Tested: 22 October 2026 · macOS screen recording MOV with microphone audio · WebKit 27.2 and Chrome 156
macOS saves screen recordings as QuickTime MOV files. If the recording has narration, the microphone was enabled in the Screenshot toolbar's Options menu. Open the MOV in the converter, choose the audio track, and write MP3; the video is dropped without being decoded.
Where the audio comes from
The macOS Screenshot toolbar (Cmd+Shift+5) has an Options menu with a Microphone entry. If it is set to None, the recording has no narration. The MOV will still play; it is simply silent.
The toolbar does not record system audio by default. If you need the sound of an app, you need a recorder that captures it (a virtual audio device, a meeting app’s own recording, or a screen recorder with that feature). The built-in tool is not that.
Check the MOV before converting
- Open the MOV in QuickTime Player.
- Press Cmd+I (Movie Inspector) or open Window → Movie Inspector.
- Look at the audio tracks. A recording with narration should show an audio stream; a silent one may show only video.
The converter also lists the audio tracks before conversion. If the list is empty, it refuses the file. That is faster than waiting for a conversion that cannot produce sound.
Extract the narration
- Drop the MOV into the converter.
- If the panel shows more than one audio track, choose the microphone or narration track.
- Pick a bitrate. 128 kbps mono is enough for speech; the converter can fold stereo to mono.
- Convert and download the MP3.
The video is dropped without being decoded, so a 30-minute screen recording does not need a 30-minute video decode. The audio path is the only work.
Screen recording limits on a Mac
- File size: a long recording can be several gigabytes. The converter reads lazily, but the tab still needs memory for the audio.
- Permissions: macOS may ask for Screen Recording permission the first time; that is for the recorder, not for this converter.
- Retina resolution: a 5K recording is large; the video is dropped, but the file read is still large.
- Separate tracks: some recorders keep mic and system audio as separate tracks. The converter can pick one; it does not mix them.
When to use QuickTime’s export instead
If the destination accepts M4A, QuickTime’s Audio Only export is a fine first step. It writes an M4A/AAC file and does not re-encode the audio if the source is AAC. If the destination requires MP3, this converter is the shorter route: one decode, one encode, no intermediate file.
What this page will not do
It will not recover audio that was never recorded. It will not unmix a combined track. It will not remove background noise or normalize the level. Those are editing jobs, not format conversions.
FAQ
Why is my Mac screen recording silent?
The microphone was probably off. In the Screenshot toolbar (Cmd+Shift+5), open Options and check the Microphone entry. macOS does not add a microphone track retroactively; you have to record again with it enabled.
Does macOS record system audio in screen recordings?
Not by default in the built-in Screenshot tool. It records the microphone if selected. System audio usually needs a virtual audio device or a different recorder. Check the MOV's track list; if there is only a video track, there is no audio to extract.
Can I extract only the narration?
If the recording has separate microphone and system-audio tracks, the panel lists both. Choose the microphone track. If the recorder mixed them into one track, the mix is what you get; separating them needs a DAW.
Does QuickTime Player export the audio?
Yes, File → Export As → Audio Only writes an M4A/AAC file. It does not write MP3. This converter reads the MOV directly and writes MP3 without the intermediate M4A.
Is the recording uploaded?
No. The MOV is read from disk and processed in the tab. There is no upload endpoint.
